Welcome to My Avalon Garden

Hyacinths
Hyacinths

Our adventures in gardening began with several bags of Fall planted bulbs from our local warehouse store and a vague plan. After toiling in the cold October rain, digging up lawn to create flower beds, and what felt like being covered in mud from head to toe, we got them all planted and waited until Spring.

When the hyacinths began to bloom, it was a magical experience. The heady perfume of the hyacinths welcomed us home from work each evening. You could smell it from several houses away. Our neighbors raved about the beauty and fragrance. We brought cut hyacinths indoors to put in small vases in various rooms.

Then the tulips began their show. A kaleidoscope of color brightened up rainy spring days and they made sunny days even brighter.

After the spring bulbs finished blooming we were hooked. We began sprinkling in little plant starts from the local nursery and at the time our local grocery store had huge potted dahlias at reasonable prices. That first summer we talked about roses but concluded that they were too high-maintenance for our tastes... famous last words! One David Austin rose (Jubilee Celebration English Shrub Rose) led to six more roses next spring, and the rest is history!

Next, we tried our hand at seed starting to keep costs down on our burgeoning hobby/obsession. Tomatoes, hot peppers, herbs, annual flowers, and perennial flowers. Starting trays of seeds in the dead of winter fills us with joy and hope for the coming garden season.

Gardening is such a a life-affirming activity! It's relaxing, grounding and great for mental health. Studies show that beneficial microbes in the soil can boost your immune system, not to mention the Vitamin D boost that being out in daylight can provide. It's great exercise and you can grow your own fresh fruits and vegetables. So many benefits!

We hope this blog inspires you to start gardening, keep on gardening, or get back into it. We'll help you discover new plants and ideas to try with our weekly updates and newsletter. You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and watch our relaxing flower videos on YouTube.
